Two Humans, One Cat, and a Caravan:
Why We Traded Japanese Corporate Life for the Aussie Open Road
After working as a corporate employee in Japan for about seven years, I woke up to a hard truth: my life lacked a spark. It was stable, predictable, and comfortable—but empty of real excitement.
I asked myself a simple but heavy question: “If I died tomorrow, would I regret not seeing what else the world has to offer?”
The answer was an instant yes. To ensure I wouldn’t look back with regret, my wife and I made a defining choice. We quit our jobs, packed our bags, and chose the Working Holiday route to Australia—a country renowned for its breathtaking nature, vibrant multiculturalism, and warm, welcoming people.
But our journey came with a beautiful, unique twist. We weren’t traveling alone. We brought our most precious family member with us: our beloved Ragdoll cat.
The Ultimate Challenge: Traveling the Continent with a Cat
Moving to a new country is hard enough, but doing it with a cat changes the entire game. Standard travel options like hotels or Airbnb are heavily restricted when you have a pet. More importantly, we wanted our cat to feel safe and secure, not constantly stressed by changing hotel rooms every few days.
We wanted to explore as much of this massive continent as possible, but we needed consistency for our furry family member.
That is when we discovered the ultimate solution: Caravan Living.
A caravan would become our movable sanctuary. No matter where we parked—whether in the heart of a vineyard or near a rugged coastline—the inside of that caravan would always be our cat’s familiar, safe “home.”
The only catch? I had absolutely zero experience. I had never hitched, towed, or backed up a massive trailer in my entire life.
Finding the Muscle: Enter the Mitsubishi Pajero
To pull our new mobile home (a classic 2003 Jayco Freedom), we needed a vehicle with serious muscle. I spent weeks researching legendary Australian off-roaders like the Toyota Prado and the Mitsubishi Pajero.
Ultimately, we locked in a robust 2006/07 Mitsubishi Pajero. It had the towing capacity, the reliability, and the grit to pull our family and our entire life across thousands of kilometers of Australian terrain.
Stepping into the driver’s seat of a heavy 4WD hitched to a massive caravan for the first time was terrifying—but it was the gateway to absolute freedom.
What This Blog Is About: Our Blueprint for the Ultimate Aussie Road Trip
Right now, we are based around the Mildura region, working hard on a grape vineyard, saving up, and preparing for the ultimate 2,800km road trip from Victoria all the way to Perth via Adelaide.
We learned everything the hard way, through trial and error. And that is exactly why we built this blog. Moving forward, we will be updating this space regularly with deep, honest guides sharing the realities of our lifestyle:
